My pregnancy flagged for Trisomy 18 on my NIPT draw. Despite being in the window, Dr. Mervin denied my request for a NT scan to look for soft markers. He instead said I needed to see the practice MFM and wait for an amniocentesis (4 weeks later). T18 often has significant defects. I sought care elsewhere just days later. The doctors I saw were at a large, internationally known research hospital and were horrified I had not been offered an ultrasound or CVS. My ultrasound showed major defects of the heart, organs, extremities, and a NT measurement nearly 3x the normal range. Dr. Mervin’s recommended treatment plan would have left me in limbo for weeks and went against standard recommendations for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
