My psychiatrist referred me to the field of Sleep Medicine. Anupama Tiwari MD at Albany Med spent only 10 minutes in the exam room, dismissively recommending a cup of warm milk at bedtime. She abruptly left, sending me to the Sleep Lab while billing Medicare for 45 minutes to cover her careless intake. Without reviewing the lab results with me in person, Dr. Tiwari then diagnosed me with 'Obstructive Sleep Apnea' and ordered a CPAP machine. On the phone, the lab technician mentioned that I was only on the 'Cusp' of Sleep Apnea, which might make the CPAP not medically necessary. At follow-up to check on CPAP usage pursuant to Medicare protocols, Dr. Tiwari came unprepared, admitting she was totally unqualified in the 'Psychiatric Branch' of Sleep Medicine. Livanta, Medicare's Quality-of-Care Department, performed a rigorous peer review of her records, suggesting the Sleep Disorders Program at Mount Sinai Integrative Sleep Center in Manhattan for leading research on behavioral therapies.
