I brought my 20-year-old daughter to see Dr. Helgerson with concerns that her symptoms might be related to endometriosis, especially given our family history. Unfortunately, we left the appointment feeling dismissed and incredibly frustrated.Dr. Helgerson spoke to my daughter in an overly simplified, almost condescending manner—drawing pictures and making blanket statements like “every woman goes through this,” despite the severity of her symptoms. Even worse, she repeatedly talked over my daughter and was dismissive of her concerns. My daughter tried to explain what she was feeling, but it was clear the doctor wasn’t truly listening.I had to insist that a lab sample be taken, which Dr. Helgerson agreed to only to “prove it wasn’t an infection.” Unsurprisingly, the test came back showing it was an infection.Telling someone to take ibuprofen and exercise when they’re dealing with pain so severe it causes vomiting and leaves them curled up on the floor is not appropriate or helpful.
