When I saw her years ago, I was experiencing rapid weight gain and increased apitite, about 30 pounds in one year, despite dieting and consistent exercise. As a high-performance athlete, this sudden change was devastating to my career. I tried to explain that my weight gain wasn’t normal for me, yet Dr. Silva dismissed it as part of puberty even though I had finished puberty at 12 and was almost an adult at the time. She insisted nothing was wrong and encouraged me to eat more, saying my weight was healthy. That may have been true (barely) but it wasn’t healthy for my athletic goals or what my body had been used to. Instead of investigating possible hormonal issues, she reassured me superficially, as if I had body image problems. Later, another doctor diagnosed me with PCOS and insulin resistance. I took berberine and the weight came off quickly. This proved my instincts were right. This still makes me angry. If I found out sooner, I would have been able to make a comeback in my career
