LeBonheur and the nurses were amazing at our angiogram CT scan today. However, Dr. Daniel Brezina, the anesthesiologist, was so unprofessional and unkind and I became upset to the point of crying which resulted in my daughter crying at an already very stressful and traumatic time. We were there for an angiogram CT scan under sedation. Dr. Brezina did not want to sedate her. He said, “ I don’t understand why we’re sedating a 17-year-old for a five minute procedure”. I was trying to explain to him that she’s already had two heart surgeries, two brain surgeries, ear surgery, and thumb surgery and she has a very intense phobia of IVs. That didn’t seem too give him any type of understanding. He kept saying that he didn’t understand why we were doing that. I said “obviously you don’t have phobias.”. And he agreed that he did not. Then he asked me if she had any medical issues. I was sort of flabbergasted at that point. I said obviously she does - that’s why were here today. I don’t believe there’s any way he could’ve looked at her chart or he would’ve known that and known that she has 22Q deletion syndrome. When we went to the hallway because the talk was getting escalated he said he just needed to get through his “freaking questions”. He kept saying how unnecessary it was to go through these risks. I am certain he probably doesn’t have any mental or emotional health problems or has had to be in counseling from trauma due to anesthesia and has no understanding whatsoever of what it’s like to be a 17 year old girl with special needs with intense phobias. Why he couldn’t do what he was scheduled to do, I don’t know. Why he didn’t prepare better, I don’t know. I think it must be from lack of compassion or due diligence. This procedure was over 12 hours ago and I’m still crying. My daughter is upset, my husband is mad and it has affected our whole family. I love LeBonheur, but I hope I never see him again. What was most ironic to me, was that when he came back in he said he had actually done her anesthesia in 2021 for her ear surgery. If he could’ve just looked at the chart he would’ve seen we went through the exact same thing then and she had to be sedated. I understand that my 17-year-old is not like other 17 year olds because she has special needs. That doesn’t mean she is not important.
