I had surgery with Dr. Whitehead 4 moths ago and I couldn't be happier with the physical results, their technical skill is undeniable. That said, I had a difficult experience interpersonally. During consultations, Dr. Whitehead kept mentioning man boobs in reference to my potential results. When I pushed back on this he called me a 'big guy' and said it was cis I would have man boobs. This was concerning because he kept bringing up a result that included boobs for a gender affirming removal of breasts. Also because he is one of the only surgeons in the area without a bmi requirement who I've seen reviews state is body positive. I chose him in part because of those reviews because I have a history of eating disorders. I ended up scheduling a follow up telehealth consult to make sure we were on the same page about my desired results and it only made me feel worse as he made me feel like I was wasting his time and doubled down on his comments about me being a "big guy". In addition, on the day of the surgery he didn't answer any of my questions, instead givng glib "it will be what it is" answers. My partner who is a medical professional was in the room with me pre-op and was take aback by the surgeon's poor bedside manner. I want to acknowledge the expertise they bring, but I also think it's important for patients,especially those in larger bodies, to know what to expect. A good surgical result doesn't negate the impact of harmful language or a lack of empathy. If bedside manner is not a concern for you his results are great. However, know his attitude will likely not leave you feeling the best.

My first experience with Dr. Whitehead back in Oct. 2021 I’d said was up to that point my best experience with a medical provider. Very gender affirming. My later appointments followed suit. I found Dr. Whitehead very knowledgeable and technically savvy. Had metoidioplasty, etc. with Dr. Whitehead as chief surgeon (Dr. Harvey Winkler and Dr. Darius Paduch also participated), and was set up quite nicely for recovery at NSUH. Additionally, I’ve found Dr. Whitehead to be quite compassionate and with a wonderful bedside manner. I find Dr. Whitehead easy to talk to, and had my questions answered. I do wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Whitehead.
