A trip to the emergency room in the summer of 2019 confirmed a mass in my dad's lung and the ER doctor delivered the bad news it was likely cancer. After getting a PET/CT done at Medstar Georgetown Hospital, we were referred to Dr. Jessica Wang Memoli at the Washington Hospital Center. Despite the PET results showing abnormal tracer uptake at several locations, she didn't think it was cancer and told us to wait a few weeks. After about a month and a half of waiting, my dad had another CT scan. She concluded that the mass, which was still present despite some shrinkage, was no longer a problem. The PET result stated in serious terms that the findings were "highly suspicious for neoplasm unless proven otherwise." She didn't even tell my dad to follow up and memorably said: "You don't need me anymore." We believed her because we trusted her expertise. A year later, my dad was diagnosed with stage III lung cancer at another hospital.
