I recently had an appointment at the Marshfield Clinic because I had my annual sinus infection; I have had these each year for decades. My symptoms were very familiar to me: Pain and pressure in my face, eyes, and forehead; a sore and stuffy nose with discolored mucus; coughing; a sore throat (at the beginning); a fever (at the beginning). We all agreed, "Yes, it is a sinus infection." The provider sent the antibiotic prescription to my pharmacy. Then she said, "Let's run a COVID test, just to rule that out." I tentatively said, "Okay." Had I known that they use the same swab for a battery of other tests that would add up to some $800, I never would have agreed to the COVID test. Now it will take me months to pay for a COVID test I could have self-administered for $30. None of the tests, incidentally, came back positive. We ALL knew it was a sinus infection.
