I cannot even begin to express the betrayal and feelings of violation that Dr. Cruz put me through. I came to see him about chronic back problems. During my visit he never showed me my MRI images and told me that my L4s were 100% “destroyed”. He said my L5s were 50% “destroyed”. He told me that I needed a lumbar fusion with 6 screws. This was shocking news, as I never expected it to be that bad. He even said, “get a second opinion if you want to”. Reverse psychology at its finest. I reluctantly scheduled my surgery, but in the weeks before the planned surgery I had a nagging “something isn’t right” feeling. I thought about it further and not only is his front desk staff rude, his nurse has an attitude and cannot competently answer questions without leaving you feeling more confused. I realized that if I was going to go through this and the lengthy recovery, I needed to feel cared for. And I did not. So, I went for that second opinion (thanks for the idea doc) and was told that a lumbar fusion was NOT the answer for me. Not only are my L4’s and L5’s NOT “destroyed” as Dr. Cruz claimed, they are intact but covered in a mass of arthritis. My new, very smart and compassionate doctor straight out told me that if I had a fusion it would NOT alleviate my pain (and could make it worse) and that in fact, I would likely need another fusion for the upper L1s – L3s because they would suffer consequences from having to overcompensate for the lack of mobility from the surgery. He said that at 49 I was way too young to consider fusion at this time. So, I’m getting a nerve ablation. I had a successful ablation about 10 years ago. In the weeks after my visit with Dr. Cruz I was depressed, feeling hopeless, and terrified at the way my life would have to change after this major surgery. This was unnecessary and since this ordeal I have felt like he should not be allowed to practice as a neurosurgeon. Go read his other reviews. Some are FRIGHTENING. Please do not see Dr. Cruz. Save yourself the heartache and LIES that he will give you. I am devastated at the lack of care that he gave me, but so thankful that I found a qualified, skilled medical professional to care for me in the years to come. Again, DO NOT go to Dr. Cruz. I cannot reiterate this enough.
