I never expected to need a nephrologist, but I woke up one morning in the intensive care unit of Putnam Health Center with Dr. Michael Capicotto sitting in a chair observing me. I asked, 'Who are you?' thinking one of the male nurses must be taking a break. He answered, 'If you want me, I'm your nephrologist.' He explained that the urologist who went in to remove a nodule on my left kidney saw that the whole kidney was malignant. He switched from robotic surgery to old-fashioned pre-laparoscopic surgery. And, despite having only one, poorly performing right kidney, Dr. Capicotto has kept me ticking. A better physician I can hardly imagine meeting.
