On my first visit, I was immediately taken to radiology and told by Dr. Oates' assistant that I would need a panoramic radiograph. I explained to her that I brought my most recent panoramic imaging which was taken by my orthodontist only a year before. Without reviewing my recent panoramic film, she said she could not accept it and that I had to have another one taken at the office before I could be seen. The ADA encourages dialogue between dentists and their patients regarding the need for imaging. I never saw Dr. Oates, the assistant did not speak to her, and no one at the office ever saw my year-old panoramic imaging. I am happy to get panoramic images every 3-5 years and would have been happy to get bite wings that day, but I do not want unnecessary exposure. This experience is not in line with the ADA's recommendations to abide by ALARA principles which include the use of panoramic X-rays on an individual basis based on patient history and clinical exam.
