In October 2023, I underwent a GUM graft procedure with Dr. Travis W. Kern, DDS, MD at Austin Oral Surgery in Austin, TX, in preparation for dental implants. I was 76 years old at the time. The procedure lasted more than twice as long as planned (3 hours under general anesthesia in his office, without an anesthesiologist or standard DVT prevention protocols like compression wraps).Nine days later, I developed severe swelling in my right leg. I was diagnosed with three blood clots (DVT) — above, below, and behind the knee. I was hospitalized, put on blood thinners, and referred to a hematologist and vascular surgeon. All other risk factors were ruled out. My hematologist concluded the clots were a direct result of the surgery. I now live with permanent vein damage. My mobility is severely limited and my quality of life has deteriorated.This was my personal experience and reflects my sincere opinion based on medical records and interactions with multiple physicians.
