I went for pain in my lumbar spine, and right hip after a car accident 6 months ago, X-ray and MRI showing bulging discs. It’s been a long road, but I was happy to have someone view MRIs and discuss treatment, and nervous of dismissive behavior. I was shocked, to be told patients with “anxiety and depression feel pain more than others”, and that “80% of people your age have bulging discs”. My mental health hasn’t been an issue since my teens, I’m now 30. He was extremely dismissive and felt more argumentative to sell his point, than helping me understand or investigate what is happening to my body. He spent the entire appointment telling me what it isn’t, and dismissing symptoms to mental health and statistics. I’ve not felt this disrespected in a medical setting in a very long time, and genuinely feel “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy” for pain management screams volumes to his view towards mental health with zero effort of finding what it is, just pointing to what it isn’t.
